Our Journey to Henna Pre-School

Together with the help of Qantas Airways, myself and three other colleagues, we were very fortunate to be able to visit the Henna Pre-school in Mpumalanga which was our mission to deliver much-needed donations to the school.

Between the four of us, we packed massive suitcases with pre-loved clothes, shoes, reading and writing books, art supplies, pens, crayons, pencils, educational games & toys, first aid and health items.

Visiting the Huntington Children's House of Prayer

We stayed at the Lion Sands Game Reserve which is in collaboration with Henna pre-school. The visit to the school and their village was approximately a 20 minutes drive from the Reserve. We were escorted by the staff from Lion Sands resort in their local jeep, driving through the barren landscapes of Africa.

On arrival, we were welcomed and greeted with open arms by many happy, excited and curious children. This welcome was so overwhelming for all of us that it brought an abundance of tears of joy we had never felt before.

Heartfelt Memories

What was truly heart-wrenching, that beneath all those smiling faces, the children were emotionally scarred with sadness and adversity. The majority, including newborns, was homeless and had been inflicted with HIV/AIDS. Some young as 8 years old had been raped and abandoned by their families. We were told the village had a high rate of teenage pregnancy which meant the mums had to stay away from school to raise their babies.

In 2003, the Huntington HIV counselling clinic was formed and together with 9 volunteers reached every household at Huntington village, giving HIV / AIDS awareness and encouraged the community members to do an HIV test. In 2004, the organization became registered as Huntington Home Based Care as a Non-Profit Organization.

Henna Pre-school is in the Huntington community. The objective of the pre-school is to provide schooling and education for children under the age of five who live within the Huntington Community. The school provides the children with basic skills in the English language, games, songs, and preschool education in their mother tongue, Tsonga. It also provides disadvantaged children with two meals a day while at school.

The school and community rely on the generosity of people and the surrounding community for its success, as well as empowering the children to create a more positive future for themselves.

Forever Grateful

This beautiful experience was very uplifting and rewarding to be able to give a child a purpose in life. It’s not just about giving money but empowering the innocent and helpless by giving them a sense of worth and by helping them create a beautiful world in the realms of their limitations. Education is their number one priority and it is commendable to see what great work the organisation is doing to help the less fortunate
