Santorini – Island in the Aegean Sea

Welcome to Santorini

Perched in the Aegean Sea, Santorini, a mesmerizing Greek island, lies approximately 120 miles southeast of mainland Greece. Formerly known as Thera, the island boasts a fascinating history shaped by volcanic activity, evidenced by its dramatic cliffs and rugged volcanic landscapes. It is part of the Cyclades group of islands known for its stunning beauty, picturesque whitewashed buildings, and breathtaking sunsets. Santorini is famous for its unique architectural style, with buildings perched on cliffs overlooking the large volcanic crater’s Caldera.

One of the most iconic images of Santorini is the town of Oia, with its blue-domed churches, narrow streets and stunning views of the sea. Oia is known for its romantic ambience, popular for honeymooners and couples. The architecture reflects the island’s Cycladic heritage, featuring striking blue domes and narrow winding streets that beckon exploration.

The island’s volcanic history has shaped its landscape and created some fascinating features. Santorini is home to the volcanic Red Beach and Kamari Beach, with distinctive colours due to volcanic activity. The island also has hot springs, such as the ones found in the village of Palea Kameni, where visitors can enjoy warm, mineral-rich waters.

In addition to its natural beauty, Santorini has a rich history and is known for its archaeological sites. The ancient city of Akrotiri, often called the “Minoan Pompeii,” was preserved under volcanic ash for centuries and offered a glimpse into the island’s past.

Whether seeking an idyllic romantic getaway, an adventure-filled exploration, or a soul-soothing escape, Santorini captivates with its unique blend of natural wonders, architectural marvels, and warm Greek hospitality.

The Iconic Blue Domes of Santorini

The iconic Santorini blue domes churches are located in Oia and are the churches of Agios Spiridonas (Saint Spyridon) and Anasteseos (the Church of the Resurrection). Both are built at the edge of the cliffs right next to one another. The third Santorini blue dome church, Panagia Platsani, is dedicated to the Akathist Hymn of the Virgin Mary.

How To Get There

By Air: Santorini has its own international airport, the Santorini (Thira) National Airport (JTR). Numerous domestic and international flights connect Santorini to major cities in Greece and various European destinations. During peak travel seasons, flights are increased, ensuring convenient access to the island. Upon arrival, the airport is just a short distance from popular towns like Fira and Oia, easily reachable by taxi or public transportation.

By Sea: Another popular way to reach Santorini is by ferry or catamaran. The island has well-connected ferry ports, including Athinios Port and the Old Port of Fira. Ferries operate from several ports in Greece, including Piraeus (Athens) and other Cycladic islands like Mykonos and Crete. The journey duration varies depending on the departure point, ranging from a few hours to overnight trips. High-speed catamarans offer faster travel times, while traditional ferries provide a more leisurely experience. Booking tickets in advance is advisable, especially during the peak summer season.

Cruise Ships: Santorini is a popular destination for cruise ships sailing the Aegean Sea. Numerous cruise lines include Santorini in their itineraries, allowing travellers to experience the island’s beauty as part of a larger Mediterranean voyage. Cruise ships dock at the Port of Fira, and visitors can ascend the cliffs either by cable car, donkey ride, or on foot via the famous stepped path known as the “Santorini stairs.”
