Agra – A Mughal Splendor

Agra – A Mughal Splendor

Welcome to Agra

Agra is known for its stunning Mughal-era monuments and historical sites. The most iconic monument on the banks of the Yamuna River, Uttar Pradesh, is the magnificent Taj Mahal. The majestic ivory-white marble structure is a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece listed as one of the World’s Seven Wonders. Attracting thousands of visitors yearly, it is one of the world’s most beautiful buildings and an excellent example of Mughal architecture, a blend of Indian, Persian, and Islamic styles.

A Symbol of Love and Architectural Marvel

The Taj Mahal was built by the loving Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the 17th century in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz.

History

The Taj Mahal began its construction in 1632 and took 22 years. It was built by a team of architects, artisans, and craftsmen who worked tirelessly to create this magnificent structure that is perfectly symmetrical and has precise measurements. It was designed to look the same from all four sides, and the architects and builders ensured every detail was perfect.

Exquistly made of white marble from Makrana in Rajasthan, the marble’s translucent quality gives the monument a unique glow when illuminated by the sun or moon whilst being beautifully adorned with intricate carvings and precious stones such as lapis lazuli, jasper, and jade. The carvings depict floral designs, calligraphy, and geometric patterns.

The monument is surrounded by lush gardens and a reflective pool reflecting the Islamic architectural style. The central dome is the most impressive feature of the building; made of white marble and has a height of 73 meters, and is surrounded by four minarets and four smaller domes.

The interior is just as impressive as the exterior. The walls and ceilings are decorated with beautiful paintings and intricate carvings. The central chamber contains the tombs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal, and visitors can pay their respects to the couple. Each tomb is made of white marble and is decorated with precious stones and beautiful calligraphy.

The Story

The Taj Mahal depicts a symbol of love. As history is told, Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal in memory of his wife, who sadly died while giving birth to their 14th child. He was so heartbroken by her death that he created the most beautiful monument to honour her memory. The Taj Mahal is a testament to love’s power and the lengths people will go to keep those they love. It is a legend of eternal love and, as history is told, was built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. The Taj Mahal houses the tombs of both Mumtaz Mahal & Shah Jahan.

It is an architectural marvel that stands the test of time, a UNESCO World Heritage Site widely recognised as one of the world’s most iconic structures and a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture, and love.
