Welcome to Kuwait City
We recently enjoyed visiting Kuwait City, Kuwait’s capital and largest city in the Middle East, sharing borders with Saudi Arabia and Iraq, located in the heart of the Persian Gulf. Despite its small size, Kuwait is a wealthy country, uniquely blending traditional Arab culture and modernity.
The best time to visit Kuwait is during the cooler months, from November to April. Travellers should also observe local customs and dress modestly in public areas. The country experiences a desert climate, with sweltering summers and moderate winters, so consider this when planning your trip.
We found an abundance of shopping malls which provide a wide range of international brands and restaurants. The Avenues Mall, one of the largest malls in the region, is a popular destination for shoppers.
Architecture
Kuwait’s unique architectural style blends traditional Arab and Islamic design elements with modern techniques. The architecture was captivating. Learning about the country’s rich cultural heritage, we found its architecture reflects its history and influences from neighbouring regions, like the Kuwait Towers and the Grand Mosque, also known as Al-Masjid Al-Kabir.
Kuwait is also known for its traditional courtyard houses called “hosh.” These houses are designed to protect the occupants from the hot desert climate and provide a relaxed and shaded outdoor space. Many homes have been restored and are now used as cultural centres or museums.
As you explore the city, you will notice that Kuwait has seen a rise in modern architecture in recent years, with several high-rise buildings and commercial developments being built. However, there is also a growing trend towards sustainable and eco-friendly design, with many new projects incorporating green technology and design principles.

How To Get There
Air: The main airport is Kuwait International Airport and is served by several international airlines, including Kuwait Airways, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines. You can take a taxi or rent a car from the airport to reach your destination.
Land: Kuwait is connected to Saudi Arabia and Iraq by land. There are several border crossings, but checking current travel restrictions and visa requirements is important before attempting to cross.
Sea: Kuwait has a large port located in the city of Shuwaikh, which is a popular destination for cargo ships and cruises. The port is also connected to other ports in the Gulf region, such as Dubai and Bahrain.
Once in Kuwait, you can get around by taxi, bus, or rental car. Taxis are readily available and relatively affordable, but it is important to negotiate the fare before getting in. Buses are also available but may be less convenient for tourists as they can be crowded, and the routes may need clarification. Rental cars are a good option for those who want more flexibility in their travel plans.

Standing at 187 meters tall and being the most iconic landmark in Kuwait symbolises modern Kuwait in the city’s heart. The towers offer stunning views of the city and the Persian Gulf from their observation deck, and at night, they are lit up with colourful lights, making for a beautiful photo opportunity. The Grand Mosque is another architectural masterpiece worth seeing, with its intricate Islamic design and towering minarets. This impressive mosque is one of the largest in the world and can accommodate over 10,000 worshippers. Also known as Mushroom Towers, a prominent group of eye-catching water towers holding water for the capital city of Kuwait stands as a national landmark. Five are composed of striped mushroom-shaped towers and a sixth features towers that look like they’re about to take off for Alpha Centauri, albeit in a retro sci-fi way.
